Project description
Although nature has provided us a rich palette of materials to engineer devices for control electromagnetic radiation, this palette is limited. However, the limitations imposed by nature can be overcome by replacing bulk material with assemble particles having size much smaller than the radiation wavelength. The obtained artificial material, which is referred to as metamaterial, consists of two- or three-dimensional arrays of particles (meta-atoms) with subwavelength period. The freedom in designing of meta-atoms enables a delicate tuning of the electromagnetic properties of the metamaterial. In this project we will develop and study chiral metamaterials, which interacts with right-and left-circularly polarized electromagnetic waves differently and enable control of the helicity of the terahertz electromagnetic waves.
