Project description
The ability to direct and guide neuronal growth is of great importance to the fields of neurographene and neuroscience in particular, and many methods have been developed to guide neuronal growth along a substrate. However, all of these methods require pre-patterning of the system, and do not allow for adjustments to the growth patterns once the process has started. The University of Jyväskylä, in conjunction with with Tampere University, proposes a new method to guide neuronal growth in-situ and on-the-fly using a combination of a photocleavable chemical and laser guidance, allowing for real-time control of the neuronal growth process. This has extensive, far-reaching implications, ranging from a better understand of neuronal growth to restoring nerve function to creating nerve-machine interfaces.
