Project description
The overall aim of the project is to provide the first consistent circumpolar map of shoreline changes 1980-2020, and examine their local variation and expected future impacts on land use. These data are widely applicable in basic research, coastal management and policy-making. Arctic coasts are extremely vulnerable, and they are exactly where we are already seeing notable changes in the environment. Existing shoreline displacement data are sporadic both spatially and temporally, mainly because the large area is diverse and relatively inaccessible due to harsh environmental conditions. Remote sensing-based approaches to detect coastal changes have previously been limited by difficulties in managing large amounts of data and the complexity of data processing across spatial and temporal scales. In this project, I apply state-of-the-art spatial analysis and cloud computing methods and a systematic geographical approach to fully exploit public remote sensing data.
