Project description
Heat storage improves the global energy sector and the transition to a sustainable future by enabling the use of renewable energy resources such as solar and industrial waste heat for example for domestic heating. This project introduces novel sorption materials (Soma) that can store the energy for seasons and release it on demand. Soma consists of a water-loving salt impregnated into the porous materials. This enables charging and discharging a large amount of heat via dehydration and hydration reactions. Therefore compared to the existing storage methods, the Soma technology will offer higher energy density, require less storage volume, and provide a more reliable long-term heat storage. The Soma project will be performed at Aalto University and will make use of the energy-material related expertise provided by national and international collaborators.
