Project description
The research project will develop a new methodological approach to overcome the limitations inherent in existing models that are used for scenario-based projections of energy system transition. The approach involves the analysis of two important components of energy system transition, i.e. the industrial sector, including feedstock demand, and CO2 direct removal options comprising afforestation, CO2 direct air capture and bioenergy carbon capture and storage, and the implementation of these components into a leading Energy System Model (ESM). For the first time, a modelling approach will be presented that can deal with the analysis of energy system transition pathways towards full sustainability in high resolution and flexibility for all energy-related sectors. The novel methods may also serve the advancement of other ESMs and thus generate substantial scientific impact. Strong collaboration networks with leading scientific partners enable substantial scientific impact.
