Project description
Particle dark matter is hunted for in direct detection experiments. To make progress in the mass range below the mass of one hydrogen atom, new experimental methodology must be developed and this development requires combination of precision materials physics and astroparticle physics. The latter is required to model the details of the dark matter and its interactions when scattering on ordinary matter, and the former is required for detailed modelling of the detector material's response to this scattering. In this project we aim to provide this combination and study systematically dark matter scattering on nuclei, phonons and electrons in different target materials. Our results will be directly applicable in development of next generation experiments, and we aim to provide solid analyses for their efficiency and reach for constraining established benchmark models of dark matter.
