Project description
The control and manipulation of the quanta of charge (electrons) and light (photons) underpins nearly all areas of physical science and technology. The quanta of vibrations and heat, i.e. phonons, have received much less attention, due to the higher difficulty to gain control over them. This proposal, however, seeks to establish fully novel ways to control phonons, and in particular, the heat transport associated with them. To do that, we need to engineer devices in the nanoscale, where the wavelengths and mean free paths of the phonons involved are comparable with sample dimensions. We propose to study several novel ways to control and strongly modify heat flow, using nanoscale devices such as phononic crystals and phononic glass, topological phononic metamaterials and phonon tunnel junctions. Possible applications range from improved performance of ultrasensitive radiation detectors to heat dissipation management of quantum processors to energy harvesting from waste heat.
