Beskrivning av projektet
Given the threats imposed by pathogens on their hosts, the ability to resist infection may be a key determinant of an individual’s fitness. Resistance is expected to evolve through Red Queen dynamics, where the pathogen overcomes host’s defenses, and the host in turn evolves new counter-defenses. Previous studies have found considerable variation in the outcome of coevolutionary interactions. The main aims of this proposal are to uncover what causes this variation, and what the epidemiological consequences of spatially variable coevolution are. The planned works spans from molecules to individuals plants to entire populations. These results will help us understand and predict how and why disease risks vary in space and time, which will have broad impact.
