Lignin, a phenolic polymer present in cell walls of water-conducting and support-giving cells, constitutes 20-35% of the dry weight of wood. Lignin gives strength to the cell walls, and makes them water-impermeable. Understanding lignin biosynthesis is needed for understanding of the properties of wood as a raw material, and is essential for utilization of lignocellulosic materials in applications. We focus on phenomena in the initial phases of lignification of plant cell walls. A lignin-forming cell culture of Norway spruce is used as a model. Focus will be on the role of dirigent proteins and exovesicles in lignin formation. Knowledge of lignin biosynthesis and of exovesicles is important for any applications utilizing lignocellulose or exovesicles.
