The plastoquinone pool carries electrons in photosynthesis from photosystem II toward photosystem I and functions in regulation of the excitation balance between the photosystems. The project aims to elucidate the role of the redox state of the plastoquinone pool of photosynthetic organisms in the regulation of mechanisms maintaining balance of the electron transfer rates of the two photosystems. Both short-time regulation and regulation of gene expression will be studied. The study is based on our recent findings that allow us to constract white-light lamps that reduce or oxidize the plastoquinone pool. A plant, red and green algae and two different types of cyanobacteria will be chosen as study organisms. RNA-sequencing will be used as a method for the gene regulation studies, and alternative splicing will be carefully analyzed, as the redox state of the plastoquinone pool has been shown to affect splicing.
