Beskrivning av projektet
Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is one of the most common causes of death in the Western society. During the last decades advances have been made in decreasing cardiovascular deaths, but the numbers of SCDs have not changed. Especially proportion of non-ischemic SCD (unrelated to coronary artery disease) has been increasing. In non-ischemic SCD myocardial fibrosis plays an important role. Fibrosis disrupt the pump function of the heart, but also impairs the electrical function. This can lead to lethal arrhythmias. The aim of this project is to study the genetic background and clinical characteristics of non-ischemic SCD related to fibrosis. The study population is the largest, consecutive autopsy verified SCD population in the world (Fingesture study, n=5869). We will also study the relatives of the SCD victims in order to detect new clinical markers to identify subjects at risk of SCD. These markers can then be used in larger populations and thus decrease the number of SCD in the society.
