The fact that neuronal activity is based on invisible electrical currents makes studying communication between neurons a particularly difficult task. For several decades neuroscientists have attempted to reveal the brain inner workings optically. Since the activity of neurons is accompanied by significant changes in electrical potential across the neuronal membrane, fluorescent indicators of membrane potential are the most suitable tools for this task. We propose here an innovative voltage sensor. This sensor consists of fluorescent semiconductor nanoparticles that self-insert into the neuronal membrane. These particles are tiny (4x10 nm), nevertheless individual particles can faithfully report fluctuation of membrane potential. The goal of this project is to calibrate and use voltage-sensitive particles in neurons. The project will be accomplished at the Institute of Biotechnology (UH) in collaboration with biologists, physicists, and chemists from France, USA, and Israel.
