Beskrivning av projektet
Invasive species possess both a threat to native ecosystems and a challenge to evolutionary biologists. The threat arises from the strong biotic interactions among native and introduced species and their potential consequences to communities and ecosystem processes, with an urgent need for monitoring and management measures. The scientific challenge comes from understanding of why a species adapted to one environment can become invasive in a novel environment. Naivety in the native community may initially promote invasiveness, on the other hand, invasive species generate selection in the native communities and these may respond adaptively. Here we focus on adaptive evolution in native communities during range expansion of an invasive species, including cascading effects through the trophic levels in our model system of the quickly spreading invasive North American mud crab in rocky littoral communities of the Baltic Sea.
