In this project, techniques for hyperpolarised metabolic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at high and low magnetic fields are developed to study preclinical cerebral ischaemia. Hyperpolarisation techniques allow transient over 10,000-fold increase of MR signal amplitude. This could be combined with low-field MRI, which is faster and more cost-effective but typically suffers from low signal, to make a MR-based metabolic imaging possible outside typical imaging conditions. The projects aims to identify suitable metabolic markers for hyperpolarised MRI of tissue damage and bleeding. Clinical translation of these techniques could pave way for novel prehospital diagnosis of stroke, leading to earlier therapy and better survival of stroke patients. Techniques are also directly applicable to other neurodiseases, such as traumatic brain injury, where perturbed metabolism, perfusion and permeability are also observed, and also to cancer research.
