Beskrivning av projektet
Plant protection technologies based in RNA interference (RNAi) are under active research and development. Such technologies have certain benefits compared to the traditional chemical pesticides and fungicides: i) RNA is a biological molecule that degrades fast in nature, ii) RNAi techniques are genetically precise and can be specifically designed to target only certain species without interfering with related non-harmful or symbiotic organisms, and iii) dsRNA molecules against new targets can be designed rapidly if new pathogens or pests emerge. The project is based on enzymatic and bacterial double-stranded RNA production systems developed at the University of Helsinki. The aim of the project is to study RNAi triggers and spread of RNAi signal in plant pathogenic fungi, and to develop RNA formulations that will improve the applicability of RNAi based plant protectants against pathogenic fungi and viruses.
