Beskrivning av projektet
The complement system is key player in the innate immune response. It quickly attacks microbes and foreign particles invading human body. Sometimes it may trigger a hyper inflammatory reaction and lead to severe tissue damage. A chronic inflammation in the walls of arterial blood vessels or brain may lead to development of atheroschlerosis or Alzheimer's disease that can slowly cause serious health problems, or even death. Risk factors such as bacterial infections and lipoproteins that predispose to the development of these diseases have been suggested but the exact mechanism by which these bacterial or human molecules modulate complement-mediated inflammation is unknown. The aim of this study is to track these molecules as they interact with the complement system and human cells. This adds important insight into mechanisms by which bacterial or human molecules may trigger immune responses in these diseases.
