Beskrivning av projektet
Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is an autoimmune blistering skin disease of elderly. Its symptoms include large blisters and severe pruritus. BP is a chronic disease that is associated with heightened mortality rate. BP is caused by autoimmunization, which leads the body to produce antibodies that destroy structures maintaining the adhesion between skin layers. The incidence of BP has increased recently in several countries, including Finland. Using data from records of nearly 6000 cases of BP, we will analyze the role of comorbidities and medication use as risk factors for BP. Of special interest is the increased risk for BP in diabetic patients receiving gliptins and in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Using samples from BP patients and mouse and cell culture models, we will also investigate the role of genetic factors in the onset of BP, and the mechanisms that trigger autoimmunization in gliptin users and MS patients.
