Beskrivning av projektet
The focus of this project is on the claim of modern religious movements and communities to constituting an ethical space, one defined by the disciplined pursuit of virtues, rules, and habits that stand out from the ethical issues and choices of everyday life. By studying five ethnographic situations through the same analytical lens, the project makes a novel contribution to the anthropology of ethics and asks what makes it possible to act ethically when former certainties, civil orders, and the law become ambiguous or break down. Its global comparative approach tracks the source of the ethical impulse to the reflection and imagination of everyday civility, with particular emphasis on the cultural and religious idioms supporting these. While not assuming that all ethics is rooted in religion, we seek to recognize ethical subjectivity in unexpected places, outside the Western domains and traditions that underpin the common paradigms for thinking about it.
