Beskrivning av projektet
Transfer of beneficial bacteria from mother to baby is presumably a key and evolutionarily preserved mechanism but its experimental examination is challenging as most research methods do not provide the necessary resolution to differentiate between bacterial strains. Based on epidemiological studies, perinatal factors typical of modern society, such as C-section birth, lack of breastmilk and antibiotic use increase the risk of immune-mediated chronic diseases. These perinatal practices are also known as the most powerful influncers of the developing intestinal microibota of the child, suggesting the role for the microbiota perturbations in mediating the negative health effectes. This project uses the prospective HELMi birth cohort to investigate the impact of maternal microbiota transfer, breasmilk oligosaccharides and antibiotic exposure on the mother-infant transfer of beneficial bifidobacteria, and their associations to growth and health at age of four.
