Osteoarthritis is a common joint disease affecting over 40 million Europeans. The number of patients with the disease is increasing. There is no cure for the disease, thus, preventing the progression of osteoarthritis would be the most helpful and cost-effective. However, this is currently not possible because the exact etiology of osteoarthritis is not known, and prevention and personalized treatment is possible only if the disease progression can be predicted. In this project, we develop a mechanobiological algorithm that can be used to predict the progression of different subtypes of osteoarthritis and optimize intervention. The algorithm accounts for biochemical and biomechanical degenerative mechanisms, and it is developed with the support of experimental data. This project is done in collaboration with Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Calgary, Cleveland Clinic, University of California San Francisco, Kuopio and Helsinki University Hospitals and Mehiläinen.
