Beskrivning av projektet
Given the ageing population structure of European countries, it is crucial to understand the limitations of deferring the negative effects of aging, the factors contributing to the decline of fertility and the mechanisms involved. Our ability to reduce the impact of senescence in humans might be best investigated by studying equally long-lived animals. Predicting changes in longevity and childbearing patterns of societies depends on our ability to develop indicators of how old we really are and how many healthy years we have ahead of us, and how those indicators depend on our health history across decades. This project aims to identify the factors that cause some individuals to age faster than others by documenting how health, reproductive history and ageing markers change with age and determine how health history and early life stress alter fertility and ageing rates, in the longest living terrestrial mammal alongside humans, the Asian elephant.
