Hyaluronan is one of the key macromolecules in the extracellular matrix. It supports normal cell mobility and proliferation, while also playing a role in tumor growth and spreading. In the proposed project, we are investigating the role of hyaluronan in the transformation of immune cells towards immunosuppressive. During cancer progression, immune cells start to evoke immune suppressive effects that enable tumor growth. We will study whether hyaluronan forms cable -like structures, which recruit, bind and polarize immune cells, like macrophages, in the tumor microenvironment. Our aim is to find new targets for cancer therapy. Furthermore, with patient samples, we will evaluate the immune signature, the immunoscore, of tumors and whether it is applicable in estimating the clinical outcome of patients. These studies will help to find a diagnostic tool to select patients, who potentially would benefit from novel immunotherapies.
