Beskrivning av projektet
Algorithms control an increasing amount of decision-making in today‘s computerized world. At the same time, human control over these algorithms have decreased. This is worrying given the effects: There is growing evidence that algorithms reproduce inequality, and they radically challenge ideas of liberalism and free will, basic tenets of western legal thinking. “Algorithmic transparency” has been proposed as a solution by making algorithmic biases visible. This project examines societal consequences of algorithmic predictions: what is the potential and what are the limitations of transparency in overcoming their systemic biases? It builds on a hypothesis: Algorithmic transparency fails to provide sufficient legitimacy and normative counterbalance for algorithmic decision-making. The research project combines critical legal analysis with empirical qualitative research and science and technology studies in a novel way. It provides groundbreaking knowledge on algorithmic transparency.
