Beskrivning av projektet
This project investigates the history of the prevailing culture of unsustainability by focusing on the use of animals in industrial production of meat, milk, fish, leather and furs, in all of which animal lives have been seen as mere commodified matter. The overarching goal of the project is to examine the development of animal exploitation since the late nineteenth century. The project will analyse animal industries by focusing on three different, yet overlapping themes. 1) Knowledge used to promote or question industrial exploitation of animals, 2) the triangle of animals, machines and humans in an industrialised society, 3) political economy of animal industries. Transversal themes running through all these are historical inquiry of the ethical dimension of human-animal relations as well as multispecific perspective which aims at acknowledging non-human animals as living subjects and not mere objects of human actions.
