Rapidly increasing burden of neurological disorders demands an improvement of non-invasive imaging tools for more accurate and early diagnostics, and outcome prediction than currently clinically available. This project will develop more specific non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) acquisitions by using the morphological information of the brain tissue obtained by 3D electron microscopy. The outcome will be highly specific imaging methods to particular cellular structures and active pathological processes critical during brain diseases such as neurodegeneration, inflammation, or plasticity. Introducing the real tissue information can have unprecedented repercussion in the early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases, mental disorders, stroke, tumors, or brain injury. The generated imaging methods obtained in this project can be implemented in clinical scanners, and have a long-term impact in clinical diagnostics.
