The ability of bacteria to sequester human signal molecules can be related to informational warfare where the enemy’s information signals are used to obtain competitive advantage. The chemokine interleukin (IL)-8 is crucial for the efficient recruitment of neutrophils in healthy periodontium. Our recent data indicates that a periodontal pathogen can sequester and uptake IL-8. This study clarifies the molecular mechanisms which bacterium uses when it perceives the inflammatory milieu and disturbs the host defense. We characterize the bacterial chemokine uptake machinery and investigate the bacterial response to IL-8 uptake. We investigate also the effect of bacterial cytokine sequestering on host response. The study opens possibilities to search for novel treatments for chronic infections, such as periodontitis. In the era of increasing amount of antimicrobial resistance molecular level information about bacterial virulence mechanisms is needed in battle against pathogenic bacteria.
