Traditional chemical safety assessment is not adequate to ensure responsible innovation, especially in new technological areas, such as nanotechnology. Exposure to engineered nanomaterials (ENM), in fact, is increasing as more nano-enabled products enter the market. Hazardousness and therapeutic usefulness are two aspects of every chemical stimulus. By contextualising thousands of exposure-dependent molecular alterations, I will infer relevant links between exposure properties and human diseases. I propose to develop a novel unified scientific framework by integrating big amount of data to predict safety and drug-likeness of ENM and other compounds. I will establish innovative genomic-based strategies to select effective test systems, hence promoting faster, ethical and accurate chemical assessment by hybrid computational/experimental approaches. I will also produce knowledge on specific effects of chemical properties, supporting safe- and useful-by-design development of new compounds.
