In our popular understanding of the world´s recent past Euro-Atlantic integration is described to have build peace and prosperity after WWII from the basis of free trade, and in advance of the spread of democratic governing principles. History also points to the withdrawal of European empires from Africa and Asia. Two Superpowers are described to have replaced the former colonial powers. Observed from another perspective the majority of states stood in between the two Superpowers. Finland, Sweden and Austria by several measures were highly democratic and yet built neutralism foreign policies outside US and USSR realms. Spain and Portugal shed their colonial empires and begun paths to democracy rather late but together with Greece considered alternative foreign policy options. These directions have been previously linked to the Non-Aligned Movement and the global south. We argue that in fact there were European states that did not fit into the three-world division and will investigate.
