Oscillatory brain activity regulates complex cognition and is coupled with rhythmic bodily functions, such as the cardiac cycle and breathing. However, it is unclear how this synchrony regulates the basic processes of neural plasticity. Further, there are few studies where knowledge on the synchrony between bodily rhythms and brain oscillations would have been utilized to modify learning. Here we first aim to find out how synaptic modification in the brain is regulated by the brain-body synchrony. Next, we will study if and how we can enhance learning by optimizing training based on online monitoring of bodily rhythms known to synchronize with brain oscillations in 1) healthy adult humans, 2) in an animal model of memory impairment, and at last 3) in a group of patients suffering from memory disorders. The idea is to find out if even in a degenerated brain there is still momentary potential for plasticity that can be captured with noninvasive measures of bodily rhythms.
