This project is a longitudinal investigation on children’s diverse transitions in early childhood education in Finland. The project will follow children’s paths from home to early childhood education (at the age of <18 months) and from groups/settings to another, covering also the transition to pre-primary education at the age of six. With case analyses, the aim is to map diverse institutional transitions that children encounter and to explore children’s experiences focusing on the constitution, restructuring and changes in children’s socio-spatial relations. The data will include video recordings and structured observations, and interviews with the parents and teachers during the various transitions. The transition to pre-primary education includes also ethnographic data, discussions and creative methods with children. This project is linked to an international project about transitions in early years, and forms the Finnish case for the collaboration among seven countries.
