Organ development is regulated by reciprocal tissue interactions mediated by conserved signaling proteins and their downstream effectors. Molecular regulation of organogenesis has been studied extensively during past decades, but our understanding on how this molecular information is translated into changes in cell behavior – proliferation, death, migration, adhesion, and differentiation – in a coordinated manner at the tissue level is still rudimentary. This study uses the mammary gland as the model organ, and genetically modified mice, and high-resolution live imaging techniques in combination with ex vivo organ culture methods as tools to address fundamental questions on organ formation. Information gained will be important in understanding the causes and developing cures when things go awry such as in developmental disorders or cancer, as well as for developing tools for regenerative medicine and tissue engineering purposes.
