Beskrivning av projektet
This project aims to model human population dynamics in Africa between 130,000–10,000 years ago. Archaeological and genetic methods do not allow population reconstructions with sufficient spatio-temporal coverage and accuracy. Therefore, this project offers a novel complementary method that uses ethnographic data to build a model of the effects of climate on hunter-gatherer population density. Together with model-based palaeoclimate data from Africa, this model is used to simulate changes in the distribution and abundance of humans. Large fraction of our genetic diversity, as well as behaviourally modern traits evolved before major range expansions outside Africa. Because long-term population dynamics have a major role in the evolution of species, the information produced by the project about the early human population dynamics in Africa will significantly increase understanding of the biological and cultural evolution of our species.
