The ability of species to persist in changing conditions and recover after having declined into low abundances are key properties that ensure species survival in a changing environment. Environmental and human-induced changes in species conditions can also cause evolutionary changes in species life histories, but little is know about how such evolutionary changes scale up to populations, interacting species, and the entire ecosystem. The objective of this proposal is to build a mechanistic, dynamics description of eco-evolutionary ecosystem dynamics that spans from individual traits to ecosystem dynamics. The developed modelling framework will be analysed to detect key properties promoting species robustness and ability to survive in changing conditions. The developed theory will be applied to the Gulf of St Lawrence marine ecosystem in Canada, to detect the evolutionary and ecosystem level processes that prevent Atlantic cod recovery from overfishing.
