Project “Evolving carbon sinks and sources in coastal seas – will ecosystem response temper or aggravate climate change?” (SEASINK) focuses on biological control of the marine carbonate system and resulting water column C fluxes (SYKE), and physical control of air-sea C fluxes (FMI), and, importantly, their interactions. SEASINK is based on a currently established, comprehensive coastal sea-air carbon flux measurement platform, encompassing an internationally unprecedented suite of continuous, automated measurements of air-sea C flux, hydrodynamics, carbonate chemistry, and relevant biological activity. The overarching target is to evaluate whether ongoing climate change is likely to proportionally increase or decrease coastal sea carbon sinks, i.e. to counteract or speed up accumulation of CO2 in the atmosphere, as both options can be a priori hypothesized.
