Project description
In HYNEQ we will study the theory of nonequilibrium phenomena in hybrid systems where superconducting nanostructures are coupled to small magnets. We aim to find new ways of controlling magnets by coupling them to superconductors, and manipulate superconductors with magnets. As a result, we expect to find properties that cannot be found from either system alone. This project is fundamental research. Simultaneously it aims to catalyse research on future solutions of fast magnetic memory technology, whose use would not require a lot of energy, and which would not suffer from heating that limits their dense packing. Energy savings are especially important because data centres already consume several percent of world's electricity supply. Superconductors do not operate at room temperatures, and thus they will not be used in such memories. However, they are useful testing tools for accessing new phenomena to be later used in the applications, and they can be used in accurate sensors.
