Project description
Almost 40% of intensive care unit patients have acute kidney injury that associates with increased risk for mortality. Injured kidneys are not capable of removing the excess fluid that typically accumulates in the body during critical illness. Patients with acute kidney injury frequently have excess fluid in their body that, for example, increases the length of respiratory support. This project seeks novel ways to avoid fluid accumulation in the critically ill who have imminent or diagnosed acute kidney injury. In the long-term perspective, the results can lead to implementation of new fluid management strategies that reduce the length of intensive care unit stay, mortality, and development of chronic kidney disease. Additionally, this project will study markers indicative of injury to the surface (endothelium) of all vessels in the body. Better understanding of how fluid therapy affects the endothelium can lead to scientific breakthroughs and development of novel drug therapies.
