Project description
China's widespread wind-blown loess and Red Clay deposits are products of inland Asian aridification and global cooling since the Miocene Epoch and they provide some of the best terrestrial records of past climate changes and eolian activity. Despite its importance, detailed knowledge of the origin of the Red Clay deposits is lacking. We aim to identify the late Neogene (11-2.5 Ma) dust source areas and transporting winds, and their variations through time. We will combine novel geochemical sourcing methods with trajectory modelling and monitoring the current wind-blown dust. The main goal of the project is to release the paleoenvironmental information encoded in the Red Clay deposits, allowing us to reconstruct the history of Asian monsoon evolution, and the interactions among tectonic changes, climate and dust during the most recent period of significally warmer climates. The results also offer tinsights into changes that may arise in a future warming world.
