Plants produce the majority of the biomass that can be used as a source for sustainable, renewable energy. This energy is stored mainly as lignocellulose in wood which can be used as raw material for industry. Wood originates from the vascular cambium but the molecular mechanisms of the cambial activity are poorly known. Our research group in the Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki aims to increase understanding of the regulation of stem cell activity in the cambium. We have characterized a core regulatory network required for cambial stem cell function. Here, we propose to study the role of plant hormones, such as gibberellic acid and cytokinins, in relation to this signaling network. The feasibility of our cambial regulatory network will be further tested by setting up a computational model on the system. In addition to computer modelling, we will develop new molecular tools that will help us to gain a mechanistic understanding of the cambial stem cell regulation.
