Project description
The structure and composition of asteroid interiors is almost completely unknown today. We have some idea of the interior characteristics for only a selected few asteroids, typically those that we have visited with spacecraft. In this project we will utilize our two recent discoveries, the tidal and thermal disruption of near-Earth asteroids. We will develop a novel theory and methods that allow us to constrain asteroids' interior characteristics by modelling their debiased orbit and size distributions. We will calibrate the models with data from one of the leading near-Earth-asteroid surveys, the Catalina Sky Survey. We will also start preparations that will allow us to make full use of ESA's Euclid mission (to be launched in 2021) for asteroid research. The data from Euclid will eventually allow us to include spectroscopic data of asteroid surfaces in the model and thereby improve the compositional maps substantially.
