Beskrivning av projektet
Why is feminism a difficult word in Finland? This project answers the question by analysing the role of the Finnish mainstream media in constructing the public narrative of feminism from the 1960s to 2007. The project argues that during the late 20th Century the news and popular media have had a major impact in affecting how Finns think about feminism and feminists. The project will analyse the roles of journalists and feminist activists in the negotiations of the meanings of feminism and its relation to gender equality and the women’s movement. In addition, it asks in which sense the Finnish manner of conceiving of gender equality and feminism is a national phenomenon, and to what extent it has been affected by transnational ideas. Close reading and distant reading will be combined to analyse research material that consists of media texts and oral histories. The project will be completed at the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Oulu.
