Beskrivning av projektet
Plants provide humans with oxygen, food, fibre and fuel, but their effectiveness in these roles is hindered by damage caused by plant-eating insects. Over 40 hypotheses concerning the patterns of insect herbivory have been proposed so far, but an explanation for the pronounced variation observed in the levels of plant damage by insects remains elusive. We will test these hypotheses using all available data on plant damage by different groups of insects at the global scale, while accounting for different biases that affect the outcomes of ecological studies. We will then integrate the confirmed hypotheses into a coherent whole. This will improve the current understanding of the patterns of plant losses to insects in natural ecosystems. The project will deliver a monograph and 12 open-access publications, and it will communicate different aspects of ecology and evolution of plant-feeding insects to scientists, students, the general public, decision makers and civil society practitioners.
