Plants release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to the air. Globally, these biogenic emissions are several times higher than anthropogenic emissions. These compounds are isoprene, acetone, methanol and monoterpenes (MT). Also some less volatile compounds such as sesquiterpenes (SQT) are emitted, although they are not so well characterized. Atmospheric reactivity measurements show that we only know about half of the compounds reacting in the air. Therefore we have to look new emissions sources and compounds. In Japan, diterpenes (DT) have been detected in the emissions from coniferous trees in about the same extent as MTs and these could be our missing compounds. In this proposal, we would like to develop an in-situ instrument for DT measurements from trees and evaluate their effects on atmospheric reactivity, ozone reactions and secondary organic aerosol formation. All these have significant effects on lifetimes of climate gases such as methane and Earth’s radiative budget.
