Project description
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. The standard treatment of metastatic prostate cancer is androgen deprivation therapy. However, the majority of patients develop a castration resistance disease and respond to current therapies only for a short period of time. Better understanding of the disease at molecular level is needed to improve and develop more personalized treatments. Recent data indicates that approximately 20% of patients with castration resistant prostate cancer have mutations in DNA repair genes, such as BRCA2. The purpose of this study is to investigate the functional significance of BRCA2 in prostate cancer progression. By using human cancer cell cultures and mouse models as well as patient samples this study aims i) at finding novel molecular mechanisms relevant for aggressive prostate cancer and ii) at providing bases to improve current therapeutic modalities.
