Beskrivning av projektet
Posttranscriptional control of RNA provides a critical regulatory level for gene expression. In male germ cells, accurate RNA regulation is essential for the production of good quality spermatozoa. Furthermore, RNAs packed inside spermatozoa can mediate epigenetic inheritance of father’s acquired disorders, therefore having important implications on offspring health. Male germ cells are characterized by intriguing cytoplasmic granules (germ granules) that participate in RNA regulation during spermatogenesis. They are required for normal sperm production and fertility, but the mechanisms of their action have remained largely unclear. We aim to reveal the functions of germ granules in RNA quality control and RNA-mediated epigenetic inheritance. Altogether, the proposed research is expected to lead to substantial breakthroughs in our understanding of the factors governing male fertility, epigenetic inheritance and the aetiology of complex diseases.
