Beskrivning av projektet
Macrophages are leukocytes, which play pivotal roles in defending body from infectious and inflammatory insults. They also serve multiple non-immunological functions during developmental, homeostatic and repair processes. The majority of our macrophages is derived from the fetal period. After birth bone marrow also produces additional types of macrophages. Within the tissues all these macrophage subtypes can further polarize to very different directions, which either promote or inhibit inflammatory responses. Our purpose is now to elucidate the molecular mechanisms controlling macrophage seeding to different tissues during the development and the pathways regulating their polarization. We will focus on analyzing macrophage biology in the mammary gland and ovary. We also search for new drug molecules for re-education of deranged cancer- and fibrosis-promoting macrophages back to normal beneficial cells.
