Beskrivning av projektet
Osteoarthritis (OA) is, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), among the top 10 conditions in Europe with respect to burden on the society. The knee joint is one of the most commonly affected sites. However, our understanding of early knee OA is limited. Damage of normally functioning meniscus has been shown to be one of the most important predisposing factors for knee OA. By the end of the 20th century, arthroscopic knee surgery had become the most common procedure performed by orthopedic surgeons, with more than 30 000 annual knee arthroscopies performed in Finland alone and over 1 million in the US. The majority of these procedures are performed to treat a degenerative meniscal injury. There is mounting evidence to challenge the efficacy of this procedure. However, there is dearth of knowledge on the long-term effect on the underlying degenerative process/risk for developing OA. The goal of this trial is to assess this issue using a placebo-surgery controlled design.
