Project description
Psychotic disorders occur in about 3.5 % during life time. Exact mechanisms how these devastating disorders develop remain unknown, and prediction of outcome and selection of the best treatment is challenging. We have presented a movie stimulus that activates multiple brain regions during functional brain imaging to 100 first-episode psychosis patients and 60 healthy control subjects participating the Helsinki Early Psychosis Study, and found this to be a powerful method to map brain alterations in the patients. Furthermore, we have mapped brain functioning during spontaneous experience of delusion that is the most common symptom of psychotic disorder. We now aim to study how the other functional brain alterations contribute to delusion-related brain alterations. We aim also to use a machine learning analysis that can find the best combination of functional brain alterations to produce an prediction tool that can be used to help choice of the best treatment during early psychosis.
