In order to anticipate the effects of global warming on animal life, there is an urgent need to establish physiological understanding on cause-effect relationship of temperature resistance of animals. This project seeks to find out why the performance and viability of ectothermic animals is reduced when temperature approaches the upper limit of their thermal tolerance. The results of the project will provide generally applicable information about the mechanistic basis of high-temperature tolerance/sensitivity, which is valid for a large number of ectothermic animals. The research increases our understanding about one of the most fundamental problems of life: why are the temperature limits of animal life so narrow. Research data can be utilized in decision-making related to climate impacts, in optimizing livestock conditions (fish) and in animal-related philosophical-ethical problems.
