Project description
Dermatitis herpetiformis (DH), a cutaneous manifestation of celiac disease (CD), is characterized by itching and blistering rash. DH and CD share similar genetic background, small bowel mucosal changes, and autoimmune response targeted against transglutaminase (TG) 2. Pathognomonic for DH is, however, TG3 targeted immune response in the skin. This research project aims to elaborate the DH related TG3 antibody reaction in the serum and intestine, and to investigate whether latent DH exists. Further aim is to study the predictive value of small bowel damage in the prognosis of DH, and to investigate the risk and burden of bone fractures in DH. Further focus of the project is to investigate the effects and health-benefits of gluten-free diet, the treatment of choice in DH, and gluten challenge is instituted to elucidate whether DH can be cured. Finally, the aim is to investigate the prevalence and gluten-dependency of skin manifestations beyond DH in CD and non-celiac gluten sensitivity.
