Project description
Hip dysplasia, or hip laxity and related osteoarthritis is a very common disease in dogs. This study aims to find out, whether a controlled intensive physiotherapeutic exercise programme could prevent the osteoarthritis from developing in the dysplastic hips of young German Shepherds. Young, 4 months old, German Shepherds with various levels of hip dysplasia will be included into the study. All dogs will be given instructions regarding their exercise until they are 1 years old, and standardised optimal diet will be provided for the dogs. Some of the dogs will also participate in an active physiotherapy programme, including underwater treadmill exercises and further home exercise programme. All dogs will be examined thoroughly on four occasions to follow up on the laxity of their hips, on the progression of possible osteoarthritis, and their physical fitness level up until they are two years old. THe study also aims at gaining information regarding young dogs' physical fitness training.
